Dry mouth has many causes. Most commonly, xerostomia occurs as a side effect of medications. But stress, depression, or radiation therapy to the head and neck also cause decreased saliva flow. Certain diseases such as diabetes mellitus or Sjörgren's syndrome also result in dry mouth. People who suffer from dry mouth and/or insufficient saliva have an increased tendency to develop bacterial deposits, tooth decay and bad breath, and have difficulty speaking, eating and swallowing. One thing is certain, there are more and more people with dry mouth and these people are suffering.
